Cancer – Part Two

What a powerful Saviour we serve. Along with all His power, the thing I like to consider is the deep compassion He uses in exercising His power. Read through the gospels and you’ll see Jesus going from place to place, constantly offering healing and forgiveness to those who had faith in Him. One of my favorite accounts is this story of healing from a truly dreaded disease: “When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed” (Matthew 8:1-3.)

Jesus can still heal today. Jesus can heal in many different ways today. He can just speak the word and we are healed. I believe He can use traditional and non-traditional medicine or a combination of both to bring about healing as well. We must consider that it may not be God’s will for us to be healed this side of eternity. If this is the case we must rely on His grace, mercy, and power to sustain us through this sickness, realizing that when we enter Heaven’s gate we will be healed – Praise God!

Regardless of where you may find yourself at this time I want to share some things with you that can help you optimize your health. One of the things we can do is eat properly. There are certain foods that we can eat that can help us build our immune system. These foods are called phytonutrients. Tens of thousands of phytochemicals exist in the foods we eat – nearly all of them in fruits and vegetables.

We will start by discussing isoflavones. Yes, I know this is another strange term. But it is important to discuss these isoflavones. Isoflavones are natural estrogens found in soybeans and soy products. Researchers have reported marvelous cancer-fighting properties in these chemicals. I can recommend them to you. Isoflavones can be found in soy flour, soy grits, textured soy protein, yellow or green vegetables, black soybeans, soy milk, tempeh and tofu.

To understand how soy foods do their amazing work, you need to know that cancers create new blood vessels so they can continue to grow and nourish their out-of-control cells. It’s a process called angiogenesis. The potent phytonutrients in soy often block the formation of these new blood vessels and, as a result, starve the tumors.

See why I firmly believe that everyone should eat some type of soy food on a daily basis? One of the easiest ways to obtain your soy on a daily basis is to drink a soy protein milkshake that you can mix by adding a frozen banana to some flax seed oil, and even some soy milk. There are also isoflavone tablets which you can purchase from a health food store.

I want to remind you to keep praying and seeking God as you make these dietary changes! Take a lesson from Jonah: “When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple” (Jonah 2:7.) Even if you don’t feel like praying, keep approaching the throne of grace every day. I know it can be difficult. If you have some form of cancer, the pain and weakness can bring on bouts of discouragement.

Some of those that wrote the Bible learned about God in the same ways that you and I learn about Him. Some became discouraged and fearful at times too. David wrote: “The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.” Keep trusting in your Savior. He will give you all that you need so that His will is done, His name is glorified and for you to live a victorious Christian life.

Now with that said, I’ll quickly recommend another group of foods containing potent phytonutrients: the cruciferous vegetables. These wonderful vegetables include:

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cauliflower

Cruciferous vegetables, like soy, provide numerous different phytonutrient compounds, including indoles. Indoles are able to convert estrogens from a cancer-promoting form into a cancer-preventing form. They do this by converting estradiol to estrone, which also results in a reduced incidence of breast cancer.

If you hate the taste of cruciferous vegetables, broccoli capsules are now available; you can take them once or twice a day. Or take “indole-carbinol-phytonutrient capsules, which are available at health food stores.

One more thing to know: Foods such as wheat grass, alfalfa, barley grass, spirulina, chlorella and blue-green algae are all extremely high in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been found to have anticancer effects, since it protects the DNA from damaging radiation. These foods have also been shown to have antiviral, antitumor and anti-inflammatory properties.

My friend, God has given us many foods that will help optimize our current health. Let us turn to Him for guidance and direction in all that we do so that His will is accomplished, His name is glorified and we, through His grace may live a victorious Christian life.
